HIGH SCHOOL/MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR TEACHER

(GRADES 6-12)

 

SALARY:  Teacher pay + $3,500 stipend

 

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the building principal is responsible for teaching choir to students in grades 6-12.  Helps students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which include singing, moving to music, and listening.  Organizes and holds musicals and choir concerts and coordinates with middle school and high school band and other staff to put on public presentations.  Coordinates the participation of choir programs in various contests.  Carries out other duties directly related to the job description.

 

DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General:

Teaches skills in music understanding/appreciation, harmony, explorations in music and choral music to students.

Plans/executes a balanced choir program and organizes class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the choir curriculum to the needs of each student.

Facilitates learning in the classroom (e.g., maintain discipline; encourage participation; consult with parents, school staff, and other care providers to identify and address social or developmental needs).

Encourages students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.

Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.

Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth, performance, and musical understanding.

Assesses each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.

Monitors student behavior both inside and outside the classroom (e.g., during class, in hallways between classes, and during assemblies, extracurricular activity meetings or events, fire drills, or other group activities).

 

Additional Related Duties/Responsibilities:

Selects appropriate music, books and instructional aids to enhance learning and requisitions instructional supplies as necessary.

Cooperates with building principal and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, parent meetings, and seasonal programs.

Communicates with parents and school staff on individual student’s progress.

Cooperates with middle school and high school band directors for musical presentations.

Maintains professional development through such activities as classes, conferences, seminars, workshops, and professional journals.

 

Working Conditions:

Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.

Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.

Ability to see for purposes of reading music, correspondence, documents and printed matter and observing students.

Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.

Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation.

Ability to bend, crouch, kneel to assist students pushing/pulling and lifting of musical equipment and supplies, sitting in chairs and/or floor and reaching in all directions.

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Ability to carry up to 25 pounds.

Moderate to high stress level.

 

Environmental Conditions:

Work is predominantly in multi-purpose room/classroom, school environment.

Temperature – normal climate.

 

Contacts:

Daily contact with students, teachers, and school staff.

Regular/occasional contact with parents, community members and outside agency personnel.

 

Occupational Certificates/Licenses:

Holds an appropriate Texas Teaching Certificate or valid emergency certification issued by the Texas Education Agency.
