Position: Lorena ISD Substitute Nurse
Reports to: Brandy Rodriguez, R.N., Lead Nurse for LISD; and to building Principals and Central Administration as appropriate.
Summary: The School nurse is a registered professional Nurse working in the school setting who strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students. The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, the early detection and correction of health problems, and acting as an advocate for health promotion.
Education/License Requirements:
1.) Currently licensed and in good standing with the State of Texas as an LVN or more advanced degree.
2.) Currently certified in CPR/AED/First Aid
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects
Ability to implement policies and procedures
Knowledge of basic first aid
Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide direct care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), and established school health protocols. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.
- Assess student problems, communicate with parents regarding individual students, and ensure appropriate referrals and follow up as needed. Serve as a liaison between school personnel, the family, healthcare professionals, and the community.
- Notify parents of accident or illness. Secure emergency medical care for students as needed.
- Implement individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and evaluate outcomes of skilled and direct nursing care and procedures for medically fragile students to ensure safe integration of the student into the school environment.
- Serve as health advocate for students.
- Ensure that medications are administered to students according to district policy and procedures.
- Maintain patient privacy (student/employee) by following HIPAA and FERPA laws
- Consult with other LISD Nurses as needed to problem solve clinical issues related to student, parent, or faculty concerns.
- Maintain clinic equipment and health office to promote a clean, safe facility.
- Maintain health records of all students using proper documentation.
